Operation LAMB is a program of the Knights of Columbus of North Carolina to assist people with mental retardation. Since its inception in 1974, LAMB, named after the biblical quotation—“…..whatsoever you do to the Least Among My Brethren, that you also do to me.” Matt. 25:40—has raised over $14 million to assist citizens of North Carolina with mental retardation. Each year, Knights, their families and friends stand long hours outside shopping centers. They offer free Tootsie Rolls to passers by and ask for donations to assist citizens with mental retardation. Their smiling faces and bright yellow aprons have become familiar sights throughout this great state.
In 2003 Council 12537, Southport raised and distributed $6,571 to the following Agencies and Schools:
Special Olympics NC
Brunswick Inter Agency
Ride The Crest, Inc.
Therapeutic Riding Program
First In Families
Special Learning Centers of Brunswick County Schools-Exceptional Children Program

Thanks to the extreme generosity of the shoppers of North Carolina, in 2003 alone, the membership raised almost $ 840,000. After the costs of the candy and aprons were paid, about $781,000 was made available to local and state-wide facilities that serve these special people.
Additional donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations are sought to reduce this minimal overhead. In fact, last year these special donations more than paid for the candy and aprons. Therefore, we can honestly state that every penny raised from our candy solicitation goes directly to our special cause.
